Türkiye reportedly applies to join emerging global power bloc BRICS
According to Bloomberg, Türkiye has reportedly applied for membership in BRICS, a group seen as a rising global power bloc and a potential rival to the G20.
Based on unnamed sources, the report claims Türkiye submitted its application to join BRICS several months ago, aiming to expand its global influence and forge new alliances. Sources suggest the move comes amid growing tensions with the European Union and other NATO countries.
The BRICS group will consider expansion, including Türkiye’s potential membership, at a summit in Kazan, Russia, from Oct. 22 to 24. Malaysia, Thailand, and Azerbaijan are also among the countries reportedly interested in joining BRICS. No official statement has been made regarding Türkiye’s membership bid.
Founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010, BRICS aims to strengthen cooperation among emerging economies. The group decided to expand at the 2023 BRICS Summit, and Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will join on Jan. 1.
