The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MoD) held its weekly press briefing, where officials provided updates on key military and security matters, including Eurofighter Typhoon procurement, Syria’s security situation, and U.S. military presence in Greece.

Eurofighter Typhoon procurement process continues

Defense Ministry officials addressed questions regarding Türkiye’s potential acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon jets.

“In line with the needs of our Air Force Command, efforts continue to integrate advanced fighter jets into our inventory until our indigenous KAAN aircraft becomes operational,” officials said.

“As part of this process, the Eurofighter Typhoon procurement has advanced with the submission of an operational requirements document to the U.K. Ministry of Defense and BAE Systems. We are now awaiting a price proposal from the relevant company,” officials stated.

Security cooperation with Syria

Officials also discussed developments in Syria, emphasizing Türkiye’s commitment to regional stability and counterterrorism efforts.

“To ensure lasting security and stability in our neighboring Syria, we continue to enhance its defense and security capabilities through close cooperation with the new administration. The visit of the Transitional President of the Syrian Arab Republic and his delegation to Türkiye on Feb. 4 has introduced a new and significant dimension to bilateral relations,” they noted.

Reaffirming Türkiye’s stance against terrorist organizations, officials stated, “There is no place for terrorist groups such as PKK/PYD/YPG/SDG and Daesh in Syria. Our counterterrorism efforts continue with determination.”

Additionally, plans for increased military cooperation include deploying a Defense Attache and sending a technical delegation to Syria in the near future.

Response to US military presence in Greece

The briefing also addressed recent reports on the potential withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Greek port of Alexandroupolis.

“Our ministry, in coordination with other relevant institutions, closely monitors developments in our region and globally.

The U.S. has denied these claims, reaffirming that Alexandroupolis is not a military base but a logistical hub for personnel and equipment transport under the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement,” ministry sources stated.
