Turkish President Erdogan to visit Cairo with Syria on top of agenda, media report
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Cairo on Dec. 19. The meeting is expected to focus on the ongoing developments in Syria, according to a report by the Middle East Eye.
President Erdogan’s visit comes as Egypt seeks direct talks with Türkiye amid the changing dynamics in the Middle East following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Focus on Syria in bilateral talks
Egyptian officials are reportedly eager to use Erdogan’s visit to hold direct discussions with the Turkish president on Syria.
Sources told Middle East Eye that Cairo is looking to address concerns surrounding Syria’s new transition government, which was established by Syrian opposition forces after the ouster of Assad’s administration.
Erdogan’s visit and D-8 Summit
Erdogan will travel to Cairo to attend the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation summit a gathering of leaders from developing nations. The invitation was extended before Assad’s removal but gained additional significance in the aftermath of the regime change in Syria, officials said.
