On Thursday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke with journalists during a flight returning from the BRICS summit in Kazan Tataristan, providing a detailed overview of key issues, including Türkiye’s internal security and international relations.
He revealed that the perpetrators of the recent terrorist attack in Ankara came from Syria.
Erdogan also highlighted that Türkiye has conducted 40 counterterrorism operations following the attack to ensure national security.
TAI attack: Commitment to counterterrorism
Before addressing the journalists, President Erdogan condemned the terrorist attack on TAI, a Turkish defense industry company, which resulted in five deaths and numerous injuries.
He identified the PKK terrorist organization as responsible for the attack, emphasizing that TAI was symbolically targeted.
In response to journalists’ questions about the TAI attack, Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s determination to combat terrorism.
He specifically mentioned the fight against the PKK’s Syrian affiliate, PYD/YPG, stating that Türkiye would conduct operations against terrorist elements in Syria as necessary to ensure national security. He vowed to establish a “terror-free Türkiye.”
US policy in Syria
Erdogan criticized the United States for its support of the PKK/PYD in Syria, asserting that this relationship poses a threat to Türkiye’s security.
He noted that instability in Syria benefits terrorist organizations like the PKK and reiterated Türkiye’s resolve to take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.
Insights from BRICS Summit
Erdogan shared his insights from the recent BRICS Summit held in Kazan, addressing tensions in the Middle East, particularly regarding Israel’s actions.
He highlighted Türkiye’s application for BRICS membership, underscoring the importance of enhancing economic cooperation with BRICS countries, which collectively represent a significant portion of the global population and economic power.
Alternative financial systems
Erdogan addressed the topic of alternative financial systems during the summit, stressing Türkiye’s objective of conducting trade using its local currency.
He asserted that developing these systems is essential in response to threats from the U.S. financial system.
Israel’s attacks violate human rights
Erdogan criticized the West’s silence regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling it unacceptable.
He asserted that limiting access to weapons is crucial to stopping the violence, noting that many countries, particularly the United States and Germany, are unfortunately supporting Israel’s actions by supplying arms.
Erdogan announced that Türkiye has initiated efforts within the United Nations framework to find a solution to this issue, advocating for a comprehensive arms embargo against Israel.
He stated that the number of countries supporting this call is increasing daily, expressing hope that the “Humanity Alliance” will succeed in this initiative and pave the way for lasting peace.
Erdogan highlighted that, despite challenges, Türkiye is committed to extinguishing the flames of conflict. He noted that calls for an arms embargo against Israel have also emerged from countries such as Italy, Spain, Ireland, and France, indicating growing international concern over Israel’s reckless use of disproportionate force.
He urged that it is imperative for Türkiye to lead a coalition of countries to raise a stronger voice regarding human rights and international law. He emphasized the necessity of strengthening diplomatic efforts, developing alternative perspectives, and increasing international pressure to stop what he termed a “terrorist state” that threatens humanity.
Normalization with Syria
The president mentioned the possibility of discussions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad while reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity.
He highlighted that this commitment is crucial for combating terrorism while securing Türkiye’s borders. Erdogan described the escalating instability in the region as a “ring of fire” and urged the Syrian government to recognize the benefits of normalizing relations with Türkiye.
Putin’s possible mediation between Türkiye and Syria
He expressed hope for constructive steps towards this normalization, noting that the region’s turmoil has attracted terrorist organizations. Erdogan emphasized that transforming instability into peace is essential.
He also mentioned discussing these issues with President Vladimir Putin, urging him to encourage Bashar al Assad to respond positively to Türkiye’s initiatives, with the outcome dependent on time.
Germany’s arms embargo
In a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Erdogan noted positive steps toward potential collaboration on the Eurofighter program, with both the U.K. and Germany expressing interest in the initiative.
He mentioned that relevant ministers would continue discussions on this matter.
The scope of cooperation extends beyond the Eurofighter, encompassing various areas, including acquisitions for the naval, land and air forces. Erdogan highlighted the positive outlook expressed by Scholz during their meeting.
He acknowledged that Türkiye meets most of its defense industry needs through domestic efforts but still requires time for certain components, which are primarily sought from allies.
The timeline for finalizing the procurement of aircraft remains uncertain, but Erdogan expressed hope that it would not take long.
Türkiye’s role in Ukraine
Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to mediating in the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing efforts to achieve a lasting cease-fire following his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Türkiye’s ties with China
Erdogan also addressed Türkiye’s historical ties with China, stating, “We have longstanding connections with China. We are the heirs of two great civilizations that have influenced each other over time. We are building our relations on these foundations while working to create deep-rooted new ties.”
He acknowledged China’s significant role in global politics and trade, suggesting that Türkiye could take new steps to develop its strategic partnership with China. Erdogan mentioned ongoing discussions with Chinese counterparts about increasing bilateral trade volume and exploring investment opportunities.
He announced an anticipated visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Türkiye, followed by a reciprocal visit from Turkish officials, emphasizing that this will occur in the near future.
Discussion on defense industry funding
In response to questions about the recent discussions surrounding increased funding for Türkiye’s defense industry, particularly concerning air defense systems, Erdogan clarified the distinction between Türkiye’s Iron Dome project and Israel’s Iron Dome.
He emphasized that the S-400 program is a separate initiative, stating, “We do not consider external opinions when making decisions about the S-400’s next phase. The Turkish government will make those decisions independently.”
Erdogan highlighted that the Iron Dome program is fully under Türkiye’s control and will proceed according to its timeline. He noted that despite opposition criticism regarding budget allocations, Türkiye will secure its own resources for defense initiatives.
“Our primary focus is to meet our own needs comprehensively,” he asserted, reinforcing Türkiye’s commitment to advancing its defense capabilities through solid steps.
