Turkish nationalist party MHP requests resignation of 3 MPs, reducing seats to 47
A political shakeup hit Türkiye on Wednesday as the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), an ally of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), announced it had requested the resignations of three of its members of parliament (MPs).
The move resulted in a reduction of the party’s seats in the Turkish parliament, dropping from 50 to 47.
MHP Vice Chairman Semih Yalcin confirmed that Isparta MP Hasan Basri Sonmez, Bolu MP Ismail Akgul, and Kilis MP Mustafa Demir had been asked to step down.
In a statement posted on social media, Yalcin attributed the resignations to an ongoing internal review within the party, which led to the acceptance of their resignation letters.
“Due to an ongoing internal review, the resignations of MPs Sonmez, Akgul, and Demir were requested, and their resignation letters were subsequently accepted,” Yalcin explained.
