A Turkish mother and her five-year-old son tragically lost their lives in a fire that broke out in a three-story building near Berlin on Sunday morning, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The blaze started in a shop on the ground floor of the building in the town of Eberswalde, located in Brandenburg, northeastern Germany. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the structure before firefighters arrived on the scene.

At least six other people were injured in the incident, four of them seriously, according to local fire department officials.

Investigation into cause of fire

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with police spokesman Roland Kamenz stating that no potential cause, including arson or technical defects, has been ruled out. The police have appealed for witnesses to come forward with any information that might aid the investigation.

Türkiye monitoring the situation

On Monday, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry announced that it is closely monitoring the aftermath of the fire, which claimed the lives of two Turkish citizens. “Our Consulate General in Berlin has inspected the burned building. Developments are being closely monitored,” the ministry said in a statement on X.

While the cause of this fire remains unknown, it is notable that past years have seen a rise in arson attacks targeting the homes of Turkish immigrants in Germany, raising concerns within the Turkish community.
