In Türkiye, the issue of wages for retirees and workers has become a hot topic of debate. One of the most important labor unions in Türkiye, Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (TURK-IS), previously known for its friendly relations with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government, has recently gained attention with its critical remarks and actions directed against the government.

On the other hand, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has kept this issue in the spotlight with rallies under the theme “We Can’t Make Ends Meet,” exerting pressure on the government.

After a meeting with its leaders, TURK-IS decided to hold rallies. The first rally, named “We’re Struggling, We Can’t Make Ends Meet,” was held in Cerkezkoy, Tekirdag.

Representing 34 affiliated unions, TURK-IS took to the streets, calling on authorities to “hear our voices.”

While TURK-IS President Ergun Atalay was the sole speaker at the rally. A key point in Atalay’s address was tax injustice. He criticized the lack of action despite holding numerous discussions on the issue with government officials.

“35% of a worker’s salary goes to taxes. Life is already expensive. I’ve been a union president for a long time. Neither I nor any of you have seen anything like this,” Atalay added.

Atalay stated, emphasizing the importance of unionization and expressing solidarity with workers who have been dismissed because of their union activities.

Meanwhile, in a meeting held in July, Atalay had openly warned the government, saying, “Those who govern the country need to come to their senses.”

The protests organized by TURK-IS are expected to continue in series. The next protest is scheduled for Sept. 3 in Zonguldak.
