Turkish intelligence’s cyber espionage operation: 5 arrested for illegal access to personal data
Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT), in coordination with the General Command of the Gendarmerie (JGK) and the National Cyber Incident Response Center (USOM), conducted a critical operation to protect citizens’ personal data and ensure national cybersecurity.
The operation resulted in the arrest of five individuals, including the developers and managers of a specialized software marketed to lawyers.
Unauthorized access through lawyer-specific software
The investigation, led by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, revealed that a software program known as “Avatar” or “Adalet” had been developed specifically for lawyers. This software was used by hundreds of lawyers to unlawfully access citizens’ personal data.
The software was falsely marketed as being integrated with Türkiye’s National Judiciary Informatics System (UYAP), enabling it to attract a broad user base.
MIT intelligence uncovered the software’s deceptive claims and its role in illegal data access.
Simultaneous operations in Istanbul, Izmir
Acting on intelligence provided by MIT, simultaneous operations were conducted in Istanbul and Izmir.
Five individuals, including the developers and managers of the software, were apprehended. All suspects were subsequently detained and later arrested by court order.
Ongoing investigation into users, financial links
Authorities are continuing to investigate which lawyers used the software, with detailed examinations underway.
The Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) has joined the investigation to trace financial connections, uncover the economic scope of these illegal activities, and prevent further misuse of illicit proceeds.
