Turkish intelligence facilitates release of 5 Thai hostages in Gaza
Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) facilitated the release of five Thai hostages held in Gaza, following intelligence diplomacy efforts conducted with Hamas under the directive of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
MIT’s role in the hostage release
According to security sources, MIT played a key role in diplomatic negotiations aimed at securing the release of hostages as part of ongoing mediation efforts.
These efforts were undertaken in coordination with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant actors to help establish a ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian relief.
MIT has also been actively involved in assisting the evacuation of wounded civilians, Turkish citizens, and other foreign nationals trapped in Gaza since the escalation of violence in the region.
Hamas-Israel agreement and diplomatic mediation
The hostage release follows the Jan. 13, 2025, agreement between Hamas and Israel, which included provisions for a prisoner and detainee exchange.
The deal was reached as part of broader efforts to end the conflict in Gaza, where hostilities since Oct. 7, 2023, have resulted in significant casualties.
In line with President Erdogan’s directives, MIT maintained close coordination with Thai officials throughout the process while continuing intelligence diplomacy efforts with Hamas.
As a result of these negotiations, five Thai nationals held in Gaza were released.
Türkiye’s continued efforts in Gaza
Beyond securing the release of hostages, MIT has also been involved in broader humanitarian and diplomatic initiatives.
The agency has worked on facilitating the safe passage of Turkish nationals and addressing requests from foreign governments for assistance in securing the release of their citizens.
