Turkish intelligence eliminates high-profile PKK/YPG terrorist in Iraq
Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) successfully eliminated PKK/YPG terrorist Serdar Sonmez, also known by his codename “Eziz Gabbar,” in a targeted operation in Iraq’s Hakurk region.
Sonmez was reportedly in the final stages of preparing an attack on a Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) base in the area.
According to security sources, MIT had been closely monitoring Sonmez, who was wanted for various terrorism-related crimes.
Intelligence revealed that Sonmez was planning to infiltrate the TSK base in Hakurk, following orders from senior PKK/YPG leaders.
His mission included conducting reconnaissance and surveillance operations, with the intent of executing a sniper attack on the base.
Sonmez’s involvement with the PKK/YPG dates back to 2014 when he first joined the terrorist organization.
In 2015, he received armed and ideological training in Gara, northern Iraq.
He then participated in activities in Kandil in 2018, and more recently, he was active in the Hakurk region, where he was involved in terrorist actions.
MIT’s operation carried out during the preparation phase of his planned attack, successfully thwarted the imminent threat.
Listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S. and the EU, the PKK is responsible for over 40,000 deaths in its nearly 40-year campaign of terror against Türkiye The YPG is the PKK’s extension in Syria.
