Ibrahim Kalin, the head of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization, met with Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of Hamas’ political bureau, on Saturday in Doha, Qatar.

The meeting aimed to address the ongoing situation in Gaza, with discussions centering on recent developments, the potential for a prisoner exchange, establishing a ceasefire, and strategies to lift the blockade.

Security sources noted that the talks also covered the distribution of humanitarian aid to Palestinians and stressed the importance of founding an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. This move is seen as pivotal for regional stability. Details of the meeting highlight a continued focus on resolving pressing issues in Gaza and reinforcing support for Palestinian statehood aspirations.

What Happened

Israel launched a offensive on the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7 that killed at least 27,238 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 66,452 following an attack by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas. Nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas attack.

The Israeli offensive has left 85% of Gaza’s population internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
