Turkish FM to attend OIC extraordinary session in Jeddah
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will attend the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s summit in Jeddah to discuss Israeli aggression against Palestinians amid Türkiye’s push for Gaza cease-fire
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to participate in an extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, according to an official announcement.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Foreign Ministry stated, “H.E. Mr. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, will join the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers’ Extraordinary Session on 5 March 2024 in Jeddah to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.”
“The meeting will follow up on the resolutions adopted during the Arab League-OIC Extraordinary Summit held on 11 November 2023 in Riyadh,” the ministry added. This refers to a gathering where the OIC and Arab League established a contact group on Gaza to halt the conflict and facilitate a lasting peace.
The group comprises representatives from Türkiye, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Palestine.
Additionally, the statement mentioned that Fidan will engage in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.
With the death toll from Israel’s attacks on Gaza surpassing 30,000 since Oct. 7, and the persistent threat of famine, Türkiye has intensified its calls for a cease-fire before the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
