Ayse Barim, the founder and partner of a management agency representing famous Turkish actors, has been taken into custody over allegations related to her involvement in the Gezi Park incidents.

Barim was detained in the early hours of Friday on charges of “attempting to overthrow the Turkish Republic or obstruct its operations.” Authorities reportedly searched both her residence and workplace.

Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office stated that Barim, owner of ID Communication Consulting Inc., is accused of directing artists under her agency to join the Gezi Park incidents between May 29 and June 2, 2013. She is also alleged to have participated in the incidents herself alongside these artists and has been identified as one of the planners, the statement read.

Ayse Barim and allegations in Turkish film industry

The talent manager had previously drawn attention in the film industry due to allegations of monopolization, which led to an ongoing competition inquiry.

The Turkish Competition Authority had initiated a formal investigation into 21 management agencies and casting companies, including Ayse Barim’s ID Consulting firm, amid widespread complaints of monopolization and unfair practices. Following the launch of the investigation, the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office imposed a travel ban on Barim because of concerns she might attempt to flee the country.

Allegations on Ayse Barim, stemming from years of industry dissatisfaction, accuse a small number of influential agencies of dominating the acting profession and marginalizing those who do not comply with their demands.
