Turkish economist Mehmet Asutay received an award from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group during their annual meeting and golden jubilee event in Riyadh, in recognition of his significant contributions to Islamic Economics.
Asutay, who heads the Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance, was presented with the award by Mansur Muhtar, the bank’s vice president.
The recognition highlights Asutay’s significant research in the Islamic moral economy and his efforts to align Islamic finance with sustainable development goals and human welfare.
In a statement, the IsDB praised Asutay’s commitment to promoting an equitable economic framework rooted in Islamic principles.
Expressing gratitude for the award, Asutay credited his students and research collaborators for their invaluable insights and dedication to advancing Islamic finance and development.
IsDB celebrates 50th anniversary
IsDB Group marked its 50th anniversary with a grand jubilee ceremony held in Riyadh on Sunday.
The event saw the participation of esteemed dignitaries from member nations and international organizations.
Notable speakers included Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan, IsDB Governor Muhammad Sulaiman al-Jasser, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hissein Brahim Taha. Additionally, prominent figures such as International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga delivered speeches.
Leaders such as Odile Renaud-Basso, president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Akinwumi Adesina, head of the Africa Development Bank, also sent video messages.
Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek was also present among the distinguished guests at the event.
