Turkish Cyprus honors July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day

A solemn ceremony was held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to commemorate “15 July Democracy and National Unity Day,” marking the 8th anniversary of the failed coup attempt in Türkiye orchestrated by the Fetullah Gulen Terrorist Organization (FETO).

The event took place at the Bogaz Martyrdom in the city of Girne and was attended by prominent figures including KKTC President Ersin Tatar, President of the Republic Assembly Zorlu Tore, Prime Minister Unal Ustel, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Lefkosa Metin Feyzioglu, Turkish Cypriot Peace Forces Commander Major General Sebahattin Kilinc, Security Forces Commander Major General Osman Aytac, various ministers, military personnel and citizens.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence, the reading of the Turkish National Anthem, and the raising of the flags of Türkiye and TRNC. Following speeches, prayers were recited, and roses were placed on the graves of those fallen.

President Tatar’s address

In his address, TRNC President Ersin Tatar emphasized the significance of remembering the martyrs on the anniversary of the coup attempt.

He highlighted the insidious nature of FETO, which had infiltrated the Turkish state with a parallel structure.

President Tatar praised the resilience and bravery of the Turkish people, who on the night of 15 July, defended their democracy and national will against the coup attempt.

In a message released for the occasion, President Tatar noted the unwavering determination of the Turkish people to protect democracy and national sovereignty. He paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the unity and integrity of the Republic.

The traitors who aimed to disrupt the unity and solidarity of the Republic of Türkiye were thwarted by the strong will of the Turkish nation and the sacrifices of our heroic security forces,
