Turkish Consulate in Aleppo resumes operations after 12-year closure
Türkiye’s Consulate General in Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, has resumed operations after being closed for 12 years due to the ongoing conflict in the country.
The consulate, which suspended services in July 2012 amid escalating violence, officially reopened with the Turkish flag raised during a ceremony.
The reopening follows the re-establishment of Türkiye’s diplomatic presence in Damascus. Türkiye’s Ambassador to Syria, Burhan Koroglu, who was appointed as chargé d’affaires in Damascus on Dec. 12, expressed optimism about the renewed ties between the two nations.
“We will represent our country here and support the development of relations between Türkiye and Syria. This is the beginning of a mutually beneficial process, and we aim to contribute to Syria’s reintegration into the global community,” Koroglu said.
The consulate in Aleppo will provide essential services, including visa and passport applications, as part of Türkiye’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with Syria following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime on Dec. 8.
