Turkish Coast Guard intercepts nearly 28,000 migrants in first half of 2024

The Turkish Coast Guard intercepted 27,821 irregular migrants attempting to cross into Europe Between January and July 2024.

The migrants, fleeing their countries for various reasons, were caught during operations along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.

Preventing illegal crossings

The Coast Guard teams patrolled the shores of Aydin, Balikesir, Izmir, Canakkale, Mugla, and Antalya, focusing on migrants using rubber boats, life rafts and small vessels.

Operations also targeted instances where migrants were pushed back into Turkish territorial waters by Greek forces.

Operation results

• During the first seven months of the year, the Coast Guard intervened in 986 incidents, leading to the arrest of over 27,800 migrants.

• Tragically, the bodies of 40 migrants were also recovered.
• 170 individuals involved in organizing illegal crossings were apprehended and faced legal action.
