Turkish-American activist Eygi killed by Israeli forces laid to rest in Türkiye’s Aydin
A funeral service was held for Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American activist who was killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank on Sept.6.
This morning, Eygi’s body was brought to her family’s home in Altinkum, a municipality in Aydin’s Didem, where prayers were recited and respects were paid.
Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas joined Eygi’s father, Mehmet Suat Eygi, and relatives to convey condolences.
Following the prayers, the funeral procession moved to Didim Central Mosque, where a large crowd gathered.
Ahead of the prayers, Future Party Chairman Ahmet Davutoglu and Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus visited the family to offer their condolences.
Eygi was laid to rest after the noon prayers at Didim Central Mosque.
Incident in the West Bank
Eygi was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers during a peaceful protest in the West Bank supporting Palestinians. She succumbed to her injuries on Sept. 6.
Her body was flown from Tel Aviv to Baku and then brought to Türkiye, where it was received with formal ceremonies.
After forensic procedures in Izmir, Eygi’s body was transported to her hometown Didim for burial.
Eygi was a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a group advocating for Palestinian rights through nonviolent means.
Notably, in 2003, American activist Rachel Corrie, also a member of this movement, was killed by an Israeli bulldozer.
