The Interior Ministry has appointed Oguzhan Bingol, the governor of Istanbul’s Besiktas District, as the trustee for Esenyurt Municipality following the detention of main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Mayor Ahmet Ozer.

Meanwhile, Ozer, detained on charges of membership in the PKK terrorist organization, is referred to the Criminal Judicature of Peace on Duty with a request for detained after his statement to the prosecutor’s office.

Ahmet Ozer was detained early this morning during a raid on his home, with authorities conducting searches at both his residence and the municipal building.

Ozer, who oversees Esenyurt—a large Istanbul district with a population of 1 million—faces allegations of past affiliations with Kurdish separatist groups.

Ongoing investigation

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has stated that Ozer’s detention is part of an ongoing investigation into his alleged connections with the PKK/KCK terrorist organization.
