Treasure hunters caught using underground elevator for illegal excavation in Türkiye
In Kastamonu’s Tosya district, six individuals were caught red-handed while conducting an illegal excavation using an underground elevator system. The suspects had installed the system inside an abandoned building to dig deep beneath the surface in search of historical artifacts.
Sophisticated setup for illegal digging
Acting on intelligence, the Kastamonu Provincial Gendarmerie Command identified that A.T., B.B., C.E.K., M.B., H.D., and T.S. were carrying out unauthorized excavation activities inside the abandoned structure.
Upon raiding the site, authorities discovered a custom-built elevator allowing the suspects to descend meters underground.
Artifacts and tools seized
During the operation, law enforcement officers confiscated five scent bottles, two ceramic vessels, and various digging tools. The suspects were detained, and legal proceedings have been initiated against them.
