Thousands in Spain demand immediate halt to arms trade with Israel
Many rally across Spain, condemning Israel’s actions and calling for an immediate end to arms trade in support of Palestine
Hundreds and thousands of individuals joined in demonstrations across Spain, denouncing Israel’s actions and showing solidarity with Palestine, demanding an immediate halt to arms trade with Israel.
The protests, organized by left-wing civil society groups and backed by several political parties, echoed with calls to end what demonstrators labeled as the “genocide in Palestine” and urged for cutting ties with Israel.
Rallying behind left-wing Podemos leader Ione Belarra, the demonstrations gained momentum as she announced intentions to introduce a motion in parliament for an arms embargo on Israel.
Belarra stressed the importance of genuine government action, accusing the current coalition of making hollow promises without concrete steps to support Palestine.
Despite not being part of Spain’s ruling coalition, Podemos threw its support behind the protests, showcasing unity among various factions in Spain backing Palestine.
Protesters also challenged Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares’ assertion that Spain’s weapons trade with Israel had ceased since Oct. 7, presenting commercial data indicating ongoing collaborations between Spanish firms and Israel in the military sector.
The demonstrations, spanning over 100 cities and towns including Barcelona, Coruna, Malaga and Tenerife, reflect a strong collective voice from the Spanish public in solidarity with Palestine and condemnation of Israel’s actions.
