Türkiye’s National Security Council (NSC) will convene today (Dec.5) under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to address a broad range of pressing security concerns, including the latest developments in Syria and their impact on Türkiye’s security.

Syria developments to dominate NSC’s agenda

At the year’s final NSC meeting, the council will focus on the recent developments in Syria, particularly in light of escalating tensions in the region.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to brief the council in the current situation, providing an in-depth analysis of Syria’s instability and its potential effects on Türkiye’s security.

A significant topic of discussion will be the potential risk of a fresh wave of migration from Syria, triggered by the ongoing conflict and shifting territorial control.

The council will evaluate possible measures to address this concern and mitigate its impact on Türkiye.

PKK/YPG threats, ongoing operations

Another major point of focus will be the PKK/YPG terrorist groups’ activities in Syria and northern Iraq. Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Chief Ibrahim Kalin are expected to provide updates on the ongoing operations against these groups, particularly in the key region of Zap, where recent operations have led to significant successes.

The council is also likely to discuss the current state of Türkiye’s anti-terrorism efforts in the region, including the latest developments in Iraq’s northern Zap region, where key positions have been secured.

Besides Syria, the meeting will also touch on broader geopolitical developments that may affect regional security.

Discussions are expected to cover the rising tensions because of Israel’s actions in the Middle East, as well as the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has global ramifications.
