Sweden will not support the terrorist groups YPG, PYD, or the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) in any way, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced during a joint news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Türkiye’s capital, Ankara, on Tuesday.

“We have expressed that we will not support the organizations referred to as YPG, PYD, and FETO by Türkiye in any way,” Stenergard said.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU, has waged a 40-year terror campaign against Türkiye, resulting in the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children, and the elderly. The YPG is the PKK’s affiliate in Syria.

Sweden important ‘partner and ally’ for Türkiye

Meanwhile, Fidan reminded that during the accession process of Finland and Sweden to NATO, Türkiye was involved in a negotiation process that centered on its own security concerns.

Stating that a consensus of understanding was reached on security, especially at the NATO Summit held in Madrid in 2022, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with the leaders of Sweden and Finland, Fidan said that there was a consensus of understanding on the principles on which the fight against terrorism should be carried out between these three countries.

Stating that last year, Sweden and Türkiye celebrated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Fidan said, “Sweden is an important partner and ally for us.”

Regarding the Gaza cease- fire that began on Sunday, Fidan emphasized the significance of maintaining the truce for the stability of the region.

“The continuation of the cease-fire in Gaza is important. It is crucial both for the survival of the 2 million Palestinians held hostage there and for the continuation of regional stability,” Fidan stated.
