Swedish foreign minister says Hungary will ratify Stockholm’s NATO application soon, despite Hungary’s calls to re-negotiate the application

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said Wednesday that he expects Hungary to approve the Swedish NATO membership application soon.

“We welcome that Türkiye has completed its ratification process and expect Hungary to follow shortly,” Billstrom said in a speech to parliament.

Two weeks ago, the leader of Hungary’s governing party suggested that Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson arrange a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest to finalize and negotiate Stockholm’s NATO membership.

Swedish foreign ministry said there is nothing to negotiate.

Mate Kocsis, the head of Fidesz, stated on social media that the ratification of Sweden’s NATO accession could occur early in the regular parliamentary session but emphasized the necessity of the prime ministers’ meeting in Budapest.

He added if Sweden values joining NATO, they should prioritize the meeting similarly to their visit to Türkiye.
