Stronger EU-Türkiye ties crucial during Trump’s 2nd term: ETTIC Chairman
Dr. Markus C. Slevogt, chairman of the European-Turkish Trade and Investment Council (ETTIC), emphasized Türkiye’s significance for the European Union amid shifting global dynamics.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Slevogt pointed out that a potential second Donald Trump presidency could negatively impact Europe’s strategic environment, making closer ties with Türkiye essential.
Customs Union update deemed crucial
Slevogt stressed the importance of modernizing the Customs Union between the EU and Türkiye, established in 1996. “The framework dates back to the 1970s and doesn’t address modern trade needs like e-commerce, services, agriculture, or public procurement,” he explained.
Highlighting the annual trade volume exceeding €220 billion ($230.68 billion) and European investments in Türkiye surpassing €200 billion since 2002, he called for an upgrade to reflect 21st-century requirements.
The draft of the Customs Union of 1996 comes from the 1970s. The trade and investment dimension of the Customs Union is not sufficient for today’s needs. As it stands, the Customs Union does not cover the big parts that are needed, such as e-commerce, services, agriculture and public procurement. It needs to be adapted to the business and trade needs of the 21st century.
“We believe that progress will be made in updating the Customs Union, which is in the common interest of the EU and Türkiye. These are very positive developments.

ETTIC advocates for enhanced EU-Türkiye cooperation
Slevogt noted ETTIC’s efforts to foster dialogue between EU member states and Türkiye.
Meetings with EU representatives in Brussels aim to advance discussions on Customs Union modernization and align on mutually beneficial trade policies.
“We are working to overcome obstacles by improving understanding and communication between both sides,” Slevogt added.
We will meet with member state and EU representatives to make progress on the Customs Union update between Türkiye and the EU and to understand their position on steps in the right direction.
We are trying to help improve communication on business issues, trade issues and investments between Türkiye and the EU in a business-oriented way.

Trump presidency could reshape EU’s strategy
Reflecting on the second term of Donald Trump, Slevogt warned that Europe may face increased challenges.
He described the EU’s need to redefine its economic model while seeking new opportunities. “With its strong industrial infrastructure and geographical advantages, Türkiye can play a more critical role in Europe’s strategy,” he said.
Slevogt lastly argued that deepened cooperation with Türkiye would bolster Europe’s position against global threats. “Updating the Customs Union and redefining relationships with Asia and the US will significantly strengthen Europe’s strategic stance,” he concluded.
Europe is in a position where it needs to look for new energy and opportunities and also redefine its business model.
I believe that Türkiye can play an even more important role in the European context thanks to its geographical proximity, its geographical access, but also its various advantages, such as its very strong industrial infrastructure.
Updating the Customs Union will greatly help to strengthen Europe’s position in the face of all global threats, including in Asia and in the relationship between the EU and the US, which needs to be redefined.
