Spain to send US-made Patriot missiles to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense
Spain will send U.S.-made Patriot air defense missile systems to Ukraine, which wants more military equipment to counter Russian attacks, the Spanish Ministry of Defense said
Spain’s Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced on Friday that Madrid will provide Patriot anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine. This decision comes after NATO and European Union allies urged Spain to increase military assistance to Kyiv.
The ministry stated its intent to send missiles, along with ammunition, medicine, and first aid kits for war. However, the exact number of missiles planned for dispatch was not specified.
Spain is expected to dispatch four Patriots.
This month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged NATO allies to provide Kyiv with more military support, stating that his nation required at least seven Patriots or other advanced air defense systems to fend off Russian airstrikes.
Zelenskyy also requested Greece, which owns Patriots, to provide these air defense systems. Nevertheless, the Greek Foreign Ministry dismissed Zelenskyy’s appeal, asserting that these air defense systems constitute an integral component of Greece’s defensive capacity.
