Son of Turkish Embassy employee fatally shot in robbery attempt in US
A tragic incident unfolded in Northwest Washington’s Takoma neighborhood, U.S., on Sunday night, as 28-year-old Kaan Demir, whose father works at the Turkish Embassy, was fatally shot in a possible robbery attempt, according to D.C. police.
Demir had just dropped off his girlfriend when he was shot as he returned to his parked vehicle. Police found him dead on a sidewalk in the 800 block of Underwood Street NW, near the Takoma Aquatic Center. Detectives are currently searching for two masked men who fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle.
Demir’s brother, Eren, shared that their father serves as a driver for the Turkish ambassador to the U.S., while Kaan worked in the IT field and lived with family in Springfield, Virginia.
The family, originally from Türkiye, is understandably shaken by the loss. Efforts to reach their father were unsuccessful, and the Embassy of Türkiye has not responded to requests for comment.
The police are investigating whether a dark-colored vehicle seen leaving the scene could be linked to a series of robberies over the weekend in the central part of the district. Detectives believe the motive for Demir’s homicide may have been robbery, although the investigation is ongoing.
