Siirt Mayor Sofya Alagas suspended from office by Interior Ministry
The Turkish Interior Ministry announced the temporary suspension of Siirt Mayor Sofya Alagas from her position.
Court sentences Alagas to 6 years and 3 months in prison
According to a statement from the ministry, Alagas was convicted by the Diyarbakir 5th High Criminal Court for being a member of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization.
She received a sentence of six years and three months in prison.
Suspension in accordance with constitutional and legal provisions
The Interior Ministry’s decision to suspend Alagas is based on Article 127 of the Turkish Constitution and Article 47 of Law No. 5393 on municipalities.
The ministry emphasized that this action is a temporary measure.
She has been suspended from her duty by the Ministry of Interior as a temporary measure in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393. In accordance with Articles 45 and 46 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, Siirt Governor Dr. Kemal Kizilkaya has been appointed as Acting Mayor.”

In accordance with Articles 45 and 46 of the same law, Siirt Governor Dr. Kemal Kizilkaya has been appointed as acting mayor of Siirt Municipality.
The ministry’s statement confirmed that Governor Kizilkaya will oversee municipal affairs during Alagas’ suspension.
