Ruling AK party overhaul in full swing with young newcomers ahead of polls
Change continues to sweep through the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Especially after the poor performance in the March 31 local elections and the recent revelations about the extravagant lives of some AK Party members, important changes are being made within the party, especially in the party administration.
In this context, the ruling AK Party’s Central Executive Committee (MKYK) meeting on Tuesday is expected to initiate the process for the 8th ordinary grand congress.
This congress will address internal calls for change that emerged after the local elections.
It is expected that in Tuesday’s meeting, the ruling AK Party will set the timeline for its grand congress, which aims to shape the party’s leadership ahead of the 2028 elections.
The MKYK meeting is expected to launch the congress process in October, complete provincial congresses by April, and hold the grand congress in May 2025.
This timeline will accommodate the anticipated changes within the party.
Step aside if necessary, says Erdogan
Earlier President Erdogan has emphasized that any changes will occur on the party’s terms and schedule.
His recent statement, “We view our grand congress not merely as a showcase renewal but as the main platform for the comprehensive change our nation expects,” signals a definitive move toward transformation within the AK Party.
He also encouraged those feeling fatigued to step aside temporarily.
Younger members to appear in ruling AK Party
Significant changes are expected in both provincial and district administrations and the party’s central management.
Erdogan will likely introduce younger figures to the MKYK, focusing on the 2028 elections.
Historically, he has replaced over 50% of his cadres during congress and election periods, and a higher rate of change is anticipated in the upcoming congress.
