President Erdogan to attend G-20 Summit in Brazil

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan departed for Brazil at 8:43 a.m. on Sunday aboard the presidential aircraft “CAN” for the G-20 Leaders’ Summit.

Erdogan was seen off at Esenboga Airport by Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin and other officials.

First Lady Emine Erdogan, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, Chief Advisor on Foreign Policy and Security Akif Cagatay Kilic, Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Chairman and Spokesperson Omer Celik and other senior officials are accompanying President Erdogan on his trip.

Topics to discuss at G-20 Summit 2024

The 2024 G-20 Leaders’ Summit will be held on Nov. 18 and 19 at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The summit in Brazil is expected to focus on global economic issues, climate change and international cooperation. Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio from Brazil, in charge of preparations for the event, stated the agenda comprises the global focus of discussions on social inclusion, global governance reform, and energy transitions.

The opening ceremony of the Summit, on Nov. 18, will feature the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative led by Brazil and aiming to accelerate efforts in the fight against hunger and poverty by 2030.

The discussions, which will be held in the afternoon and limited to heads of state, will center on global governance reform—a key theme of Brazil’s G-20 presidency. The agenda aims to explore ways to modernize major international institutions, including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization.

The G-20 Summit will host a critical debate on energy transitions on the morning of Nov. 19. With the world grappling with an unprecedented climate crisis, member nations—responsible for the majority of global carbon emissions—will explore strategies to foster a renewable and more sustainable global economy.

Erdogan’s projections toward G-20

President Erdogan answered questions on Nov. 13 at the aircraft, while returning to Türkiye after a Saudi Arabia visit. Erdogan emphasized the G-20’s critical role in defining global changes, forecasting that “many crucial messages will be promoted” at the summit.

Erdogan drew attention to his scheduled meeting with Brazilian President Lula da Silva, indicating the importance: “Our meeting with Mr. Lula there will, hopefully, be a significant one that resonates globally.”

Erdogan said Türkiye focused on measures and collaborations to enhance stability for advancement in the global economy, highlighting Türkiye’s cooperative steps for developing shared strategies between countries after the COVID-19 pandemic toward economic recovery.

“Energy safety is a critical issue for Türkiye. We need to establish an agenda with concrete proposals to address the economic challenges faced by developing countries in a globalized world,” Erdogan said, reflecting on energy strategies, another featured headline of the summit.
