President Erdogan highlights ongoing urban renewal efforts on 1999 quake anniversary
President Erdogan marked the anniversary of the Aug. 17, 1999 Marmara Earthquake with a social media post, emphasizing Türkiye’s ongoing vulnerability to earthquakes.
In his statement, Erdogan noted that 76,000 homes have already been handed over to victims of the Feb. 6 disaster and pledged to deliver 200,000 homes by the end of the year.
He highlighted the success of urban transformation projects, stating: “We have facilitated the construction of 3.3 million homes nationwide, providing nearly 20 million people with safe housing.”
Erdogan also discussed the actions taken in response to the February 6 earthquakes, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving disaster resilience.
After the Feb. 6 earthquakes, we started the construction of 300,000 homes in the affected region. So far, we have delivered 76,000 homes to our brothers and sisters who were affected by the earthquake. By the end of the year, we plan to hand over 200,000 homes to their rightful owners.
