Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussed bilateral relations and the humanitarian situation in Gaza during a recent phone call.
In their conversation, the leaders touched upon the ties between Türkiye and Qatar, global and regional issues, as well as Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza and the humanitarian conditions there, according to a statement by the Turkish Communications Directorate.
Erdogan emphasized the necessity for unity within the Islamic world to intensify efforts to halt Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip and hold it accountable for the crimes against humanity committed during the offensive.
He stressed the urgency of restraining Israel promptly and approaching the situation with wisdom to prevent further tensions in the region.
The two leaders also exchanged congratulations for the recent Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
Israel has been engaged in a deadly military campaign in Gaza since a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths.
In the Gaza Strip, nearly 33,800 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have lost their lives, with nearly 76,500 others injured amidst extensive destruction and shortages of essential items.
The Israeli military action has forced 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid a severe blockade on access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medicine. U.N. reports indicate that 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.
Accusations of genocide have been levied against Israel at the International Court of Justice. In January, an interim ruling from the court ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces refrain from acts of genocide and to guarantee the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza civilians.
