President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Tuesday called for global recognition of Palestine at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as he marked his 14th appearance at the event.

“I hope that this historic step will mark the final term for Palestine’s membership in the U.N. I invite countries to recognize the State of Palestine as soon as possible,” he stated.

“We are living through and managing the crises that my friends here are witnessing moment by moment. I speak to you as the leader of the country at the center of this tension,” Erdogan maintained.

‘UN turned ineffective

Recalling that the U.N. was founded after World War II to preserve peace, President Erdogan remarked: “In the wake of the U.N.’s establishment, hopes for stability and tranquility were rekindled. However, in recent years, the U.N. has become an ineffective body. We now see that global peace and security are far too critical to be left to the whims of just five nations.”

Addressing the tragic loss of children in Palestine, Erdogan stated that over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7, emphasizing, “41,000 lives were cruelly torn away. No one knows the whereabouts of over 10,000 Gazans, most of whom are children. A total of 172 journalists have been killed.”

“More than 500 healthcare workers, who were trying to save lives, have been killed. Humanitarian workers, including over 210 U.N. personnel, have also lost their lives. Mosques and churches have been bombed, and more than 130 ambulances have been targeted. Shamelessly, they challenged the entire world from this very podium,” he added.

‘What are they waiting for?’

Highlighting the inhumane treatment exposed in Israel’s prisons, Erdogan noted that Israel continues to flout international law in Gaza.

“Despite the technological advancements and the level of progress in our world, we tragically failed to save a 6-year-old girl as a human family of 8 billion. Hundreds of Gazan children are dying simply because they cannot find a piece of dry bread or a bowl of soup,” he stated.

In his address to the U.N. General Assembly, Erdogan stressed that the values the West claims to uphold are perishing, adding, “I ask bluntly: Are the people in Gaza and the West Bank not considered human by human rights organizations?”

Are the journalists killed by Israel not your colleagues in the international media? What are you waiting for to stop this network of massacres that not only endangers Palestinian lives but also its own citizens?
