Presidential prospects Yavas, Imamoglu face off at main opposition congress
During the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Extraordinary Congress, a dispute arose over the speaking arrangements for mayors. Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas expressed frustration about receiving only one hour’s notice for his speech, suggesting it reflected poorly on party organization.
I don’t want to create controversy, but I would have liked to make a speech addressing Türkiye’s problems like Ekrem Bey did. I was only informed an hour before to speak. I don’t want to attribute malice, but in a corporate party, if only two mayors are given the opportunity to speak, it fuels division. I wish all our colleagues could have spoken or at least been prepared the night before. We could have sent a message to Türkiye.

Ozel takes responsibility, Imamoglu was intended target
Following Yavas’ comments, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel responded, taking responsibility for the situation.
I don’t separate the two mayors. This issue arose due to the flow of today’s program and the extended discussions. I agreed to give Mansur a chance to speak. The responsibility for this situation is entirely mine.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu addressed the issue, explaining that he only learned about the speaking arrangements the previous day and was unaware that it would cause discomfort.
I only learned yesterday about the speaking arrangements, and I didn’t even know you would be speaking. If I had known it would cause discomfort, I would have withdrawn.

Is Yavas, Kilicdaroglu, challenging Ozel-Imamoglu duo?
Social media users speculated that the CHP General Center might favor Imamoglu over Yavas in the presidential candidate debate and that Yavas’ actions might signal a willingness to challenge the party leadership if necessary.
There are also rumors that Yavas may be aligning with former CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who is reportedly aiming to regain the leadership and support Yavas for the presidency.
The suggestion is that Kilicdaroglu and Yavas have reached an agreement on this matter, while Ozel is expected to support Imamoglu against Kilicdaroglu’s potential return. The rivalry between Yavas and Imamoglu is expected to intensify as early election discussions accelerate.
