The ruling AK Party’s self-criticism post-elections focuses on returning to its innovative, reformist roots

Exclusive by Yucel Kayaoglu — The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Chairman Abdullah Guler has wrapped up consultations with parliamentarians concerning the election outcomes, with a total of five meetings convened under his leadership.

AK Party continues its internal deliberations on the election results, with party leader President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressing the need for organizational adjustments during meetings with his advisors.

‘We must return to our reformist identity’

Self-criticism is on the agenda in the AK Party after the elections as the chairman said: “We must return to our innovative, change-making and reformist identity. A new story must be written. Trust in the law must be restored.”

Insights gathered hint that discussions primarily revolved around several key factors contributing to the electoral setback, including the soaring cost of living, campaign blunders, failure to nominate suitable candidates, lack of enthusiasm within party structures and issues concerning hospital appointments.

Some parliamentarians expressed concerns, stating: “Our narrative, once compelling, now seems outdated. Since the 2019 election, voters’ messages indicated a need for a fresh narrative, which, unfortunately, we failed to craft.”

“The AK Party’s original ethos was rooted in innovation and reform. It used to be the adhesive holding our nation together. But where is that unity now? Where are the Alevis, where are the Kurds?” the parliamentarians went on to question.

Restoring trust in legal system

“Currently, there is widespread distrust in Türkiye’s legal system, consequently impacting economic confidence. Restoring trust in these realms could catalyze a new chapter for the AK Party, potentially boosting our vote share by at least 10 points. However, failing to redefine our narrative will pose significant challenges,” the parliamentarians said.

Within these discussions, proposals emerged suggesting an inflation-adjusted increase in retiree benefits by July. However, concerns were raised about the feasibility of such measures, with objections emphasizing the repercussions of previous missteps, particularly regarding the Early Retirement issue.

Parliamentarians cautioned the nation is still grappling with the fallout from mishandling this matter and warned against proposals that may not align with the country’s best interests.

Displays of opulence, extravagance

Additionally, attention was drawn to persisting missteps post-election, notably the public’s response to displays of opulence and extravagance.

It was noted that certain activities during the election campaign, including the use of “emergency vehicles,” drew public ire, underscoring the need for more tactful engagement strategies.
