In the latest Central Executive Committee meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), there was a discussion on whether to continue a dialogue with the Republican People’s Party (CHP).

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan posed the question to his advisors, “What do you think? Should we halt or continue these meetings?”

A majority of the committee emphasized the benefits of maintaining a dialogue with the opposition. However, some members expressed concerns that prolonged discussions with figures like Ozgur Ozel and other CHP officials could create a perception of attempting to influence the government.

Despite these concerns, the prevailing sentiment within the AK Party favored continuing communication with the opposition.

Avoiding tension

It was noted during the meeting that public opinion polls indicate support for dialogue as a means to avoid political tension, with citizens preferring a calm political environment. While acknowledging the potential for sharp exchanges and criticisms during election periods, it was emphasized that such an atmosphere does not currently exist.

President Erdogan particularly reacted strongly to Ozel’s accusation labeling the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) as a “partner in crime.” He underscored the necessity of responding promptly to any action or statement that could harm the People’s Alliance.

‘We will not remain silent’

“Let the dialogue continue, but we will not allow this platform to be misused or dragged into other controversies. Our goal is to find common ground with the opposition on national issues. Beyond this, there can be no partnership. Therefore, we will not remain silent in the face of statements that could harm our alliance,” Erdogan stated.
