Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas considers Mohammed Mustafa for new cabinet formation after Shtayyeh’s resignation

According to the Reuters news agency, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh has submitted his resignation to President Mahmoud Abbas.

Shtayyeh, who has led the Palestinian Authority’s 18th government since March 2019, presented his resignation during Monday’s PA government session in Ramallah.

A source has informed Asharq al-Awsat newspaper that Abbas is expected to suggest Mohammed Mustafa, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palestine Investment Fund, as the potential candidate to assemble a new cabinet. Nonetheless, the final decision regarding the nominee will hinge upon reaching an agreement among the various factions involved.

Shtayyeh had announced two weeks earlier that he would submit his resignation “if there were plans to form a new government.”

Russia is expected to host an inter-Palestinian meeting in Moscow on Feb. 29.

Abbas is currently in consultations with Arab leaders, having recently met with Jordanian King Abdullah II before embarking on visits to other Arab nations.

Informed sources have suggested that Abbas intends to establish a new government once the conflict in Gaza has concluded.
