Palestinian Authority leader Abbas to visit Türkiye for aid talks
Turkish President Erdogan and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas set to discuss Türkiye’s Gaza aid efforts amid changing political landscape in talks this week
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to discuss Türkiye’s efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza with Palestinian Authority (PA) leader Mahmoud Abbas during talks this week in Ankara.
The meeting comes at a time of political change in the Palestinian territories following the resignation of Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh and his government. This development has brought a new focus on the situation in Gaza and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye over the weekend, the Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki announced that Abbas would visit Ankara on Tuesday to meet with Erdogan.
“Türkiye has been delivering extensive humanitarian aid to Gaza in coordination with Egypt since the beginning of Israel’s attacks … Within this scope, humanitarian aid operations will also be discussed during the meetings with President Abbas,” a source told Reuters.
Türkiye, which has harshly criticized Israel for its attacks on Gaza and backed measures to have it tried for genocide at the World Court, has repeatedly called for a truce. Ankara’s support for Gaza includes ongoing humanitarian aid efforts, with the country providing assistance in coordination with Egypt to alleviate the dire situation in the region.
Despite not having direct involvement in the truce talks, Türkiye remains a vocal advocate for a cease-fire and the urgent need for international support to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The upcoming discussions between Erdogan and Abbas are expected to focus on these critical issues, as well as Türkiye’s ongoing commitment to providing aid to Gaza during this challenging time.
