Organization of Turkic States strengthens parliamentary diplomacy cooperation among member states’ Foreign Affairs Commissions, fostering regional peace and prosperity

During the press briefing following the first meeting of the Foreign Affairs Commissions of the Organization of Turkic States (TDT) held in Baku, Fuat Oktay, the chairperson of the Turkish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Commission, highlighted the agreement to maximize cooperation in parliamentary diplomacy to safeguard common interests.

Oktay emphasized the productive nature of the meeting, during which discussions covered various topics, including the liberation of Karabakh from Armenian occupation, the floods in Kazakhstan, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ observer membership in the TDT.

“As foreign affairs commissions of TDT member countries, we have agreed to enhance our cooperation in parliamentary diplomacy to the highest level to protect our common interests,” Oktay said.

Stressing the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in deepening political, economic, social, and cultural relations among TDT members and observer states, Oktay also outlined the discussions to establish and regularize bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms to achieve the goals outlined in the Turkic World 2040 Vision.

Next meeting to be held in Türkiye

Furthermore, Oktay announced plans to initiate collaborative efforts to strengthen cooperation among TDT Foreign Affairs Commissions and effectively utilize parliamentary diplomacy. These efforts will culminate in a working meeting scheduled to be held in Türkiye in the autumn of 2024.

Underlining Türkiye’s commitment to contributing to regional peace and prosperity, Oktay expressed Türkiye’s readiness to establish institutional platforms within the TDT for active use of parliamentary diplomacy channels. Other stakeholders approved this proposition.

Addressing global crises and conflicts, Oktay reiterated TDT’s primary focus on contributing to regional peace and welfare, asserting confidence in achieving positive outcomes.

Highlighting the rich natural resources and human capital of TDT countries, Oktay emphasized the significant potential for regional and global development, prosperity and peace when effectively mobilized.
