After Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested on March 23 as part of a “corruption” investigation and subsequently suspended from office, Nuri Aslan was elected as the acting mayor of IMM.

Following Imamoglu’s arrest and his suspension by the Ministry of Interior, municipal council members convened to elect a new acting mayor.

As a result, IMM council member from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Nuri Aslan, was appointed as the acting mayor. Since March 20, Aslan had been serving as acting mayor based on a handwritten authorization provided by Imamoglu before his detention.
