Nigeria to acquire 43 Bayraktar TB2 drones from Türkiye
The Nigerian Army has announced plans to purchase 43 Bayraktar TB2 drones from Türkiye to bolster its operational capabilities in the North-West region according to a report published by The Whistler.
The initiative, codenamed Project Guardian, aims to enhance military efforts against insurgency and other security challenges.
The announcement was made by Brig. Gen. U.G. Ogeleka, during a winging ceremony in Abuja for 43 personnel trained in the operation and maintenance of the drones.
Specialized training in Türkiye
General Ogeleka revealed that 35 officers and 11 soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s piloted aircraft system regiments underwent specialized training in Türkiye on operating and maintaining the Bayraktar TB2 drones.

- Seven mission operators
- 23 engineers and technicians
- 14 multi-piloted aircraft operators
During the ceremony, 22 trained personnel were presented for winging, while the remaining members were engaged in operational duties.
Bayraktar TB2: Global defense export leader
The Bayraktar TB2, developed by Türkiye’s Baykar, has become a critical asset for international defense systems. In 2023, Baykar achieved $1.8 billion in exports, solidifying its position as a leader in the defense and aerospace sectors for three consecutive years.
The company has signed agreements to export the Bayraktar TB2 to 34 countries and the Bayraktar Akinci to 10 countries, with 90% of its revenue derived from exports.
Strengthening Nigeria’s defense capability
Gen. Ogeleka emphasized the importance of integrating advanced drone technology to address regional security concerns.
The Bayraktar TB2 drones are expected to play a pivotal role in Nigeria‘s counter-insurgency operations, providing enhanced surveillance and operational efficiency in challenging terrains.
