A new social democratic party has been established in Türkiye. The newly formed Social Democratic People’s Party (SHP) has completed its establishment procedures and is now listed among the “active political parties” by the Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor’s Office.

After submitting the establishment petition to the Ministry of Interior, the Supreme Court Chief Prosecutor’s Office completed the party’s registration on June 28 and included it in the list of active political parties.

After a 14-year hiatus, the reestablishment of the SHP sparked debates within the Turkish main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). The question of whether or not former CHP Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu had a role in the party’s reestablishment has been on the national agenda. Kilicdaroglu, who aims to continue active politics, may have made this move.

The party’s founding members are Abdullah Capar, Ahmet Arslan, Akin Gülay, Aziz Kizilarslan, Berat Umut Hosgor, Burak Celik, Diler Korkmaz, Dogukan Akdeniz, Emirkan Akdeniz, Emre Can Dursun, Enes Celik, Engin Akyildirim, Erdal Kayhan, Erdem Kaya, Erhan Kardes, Gurkan Celik, Hasan Korkmaz, İsmail Berk Guldogan, Jale Ak, Kadriye Celik, Mervenur Celik, Mithat Celik, Mucahit Cetinkaya, Okan Kanpara, Onur Karatas, Osman Ali Cavci, Sabriye Ickilli, Selahattin Kardes, Saban Ergul, Tamer Demircan, Yunus Diler, Zulfu Hamit Altin.

Historically, the Social Democratic People’s Party was established after the Sept. 12 Coup to consolidate the votes of the banned CHP in Türkiye. The party dissolved itself 14 years ago and merged with CHP.
