N. Korea’s ruling party delegation visits Russia for int’l forum

North Korean ruling party officials head to Russia for an international forum amidst escalating bilateral ties, as suspicions linger regarding potential military cooperation between the two nations

According to state media reports on Tuesday, a group of officials from North Korea’s ruling party have departed for Russia to participate in an international forum, signaling deepening collaboration between the two nations in military and other sectors.

The North Korean delegation received an invitation from Russia’s ruling United Russia party.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the delegation intends to attend the inaugural session of the forum, “For the Freedom of Nations,” with no further details about their schedule provided.

According to United Russia’s website, the forum, scheduled from Feb. 15 to 17, aims to foster multinational cooperation in combating contemporary forms of neocolonialism.

Following a summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in September of the previous year, Pyongyang and Moscow have broadened their cooperation efforts.

There are suspicions that Pyongyang might have supplied artillery and munitions to Russia for its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, possibly in exchange for technological advancements in weaponry from Russia.

North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui undertook an official visit to Russia in January following a visit to Pyongyang by her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, the previous year.
