Motorcycles were involved in 52.3% of urban traffic accidents across Türkiye in 2024, according to data shared by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

This equates to more than half of all urban crashes, highlighting the significant role of motorcycles in city traffic incidents. In response, authorities conducted 2,898,366 inspections related to motorcycles between Jan. 1 and Dec. 26, 2024.

Nearly 2.9 million motorcycle inspections conducted in 2024

In 2024, up until Dec. 26, a total of 2,898,366 inspections were carried out specifically targeting motorcycles in urban areas where their use is most prevalent.

Between December 19 and 26, law enforcement teams, including police and gendarmerie units, inspected over 2.5 million vehicles. During this period:

  • 99,381 drivers were cited for speeding violations.
  • 20,677 vehicles were found without proper periodic inspections.
  • 17,642 individuals failed to use seat belts.
  • 10,833 drivers operated vehicles without valid licenses.
  • 7,147 vehicles lacked mandatory liability insurance.

Additionally, 74 drivers were fined for unauthorized use of vehicles equipped with flashing or audible warning devices.

In total, 444,372 penalties were issued to vehicles and drivers during the specified week.

Minister Yerlikaya urges caution among motorcyclists

Minister Yerlikaya emphasized the importance of safety precautions, particularly for motorcyclists who are disproportionately involved in accidents.

“Please be more cautious when riding motorcycles, adhere to all traffic rules, and always wear helmets and protective gear,” Yerlikaya stated in a social media post.

He underscored the government’s commitment to intensified enforcement, with ongoing inspections by traffic teams and specialized units such as Police and Gendarmerie Motorcycle Patrol Teams.

“Journeys are there to reunite you with your loved ones, not to separate you,” Yerlikaya added.
