Morocco to receive Bayraktar Akinci drones from Türkiye in early 2025
Morocco is set to enhance its military capabilities with the expected delivery of Bayraktar Akinci drones from Türkiye, starting in February 2025, according to the media reports.
The advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are aimed at strengthening Morocco’s surveillance and defense capacities, following the success of the Bayraktar TB2 drones introduced to Morocco in 2021.
Enhanced capabilities with Bayraktar Akinci UAV
The Bayraktar Akinci is a next-generation UAV, or unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that offers significant improvements over its predecessor, the Bayraktar TB2. It features:
- A wingspan of 20 meters, length of 12.3 meters, and height of 4.1 meters
- Maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 6,000 kilograms with a payload capacity of 1,500 kilograms
- Dual turboprop engines (750 horsepower each) for cruising speeds up to 277 kilometer per hour (km/h) and a maximum speed of 361 km/h
- An operational range of 6,000 km and an endurance of 24+ hours at an altitude of 40,000 feet
Strategic advantage with cutting-edge technology
The Akinci unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV)’s advanced features include autonomous takeoff and landing, dual satellite communication systems, and multiple radar technologies (air-to-air, collision avoidance, and synthetic aperture radar).
Its enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities support real-time sensor fusion and situational awareness, making it effective for both surveillance and offensive missions.
Key payload options include:
- Smart munitions such as MAM-L smart micro munition, MAM-C lightweight smart micro munition, Bozok laser-guided miniature munition, and Cirit laser-guided missiles
- Precision-guided bombs like MK-81, MK-82, and MK-83
- Air-to-air missiles, including Gokdogan and Bozdogan
By integrating the Bayraktar Akinci into its arsenal, Morocco aims to strengthen its strategic position in the region, enhancing its ability to combat terrorism and secure sensitive border areas.
