MKE unveils loitering munition project, testing to begin in March

Turkish defense company Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE) has announced the development of a new loitering munition system, with initial tests scheduled for the end of March.
The announcement was made by MKE Deputy General Manager Umit Kiyak during an exclusive interview with TRT Haber at IDEX 2025, one of the world’s leading defense industry exhibitions held in Abu Dhabi.

Versatile loitering munition family
MKE is working on a range of loitering munitions designed to counter modern battlefield threats.
According to Kiyak, the company is developing five to six different types of munitions, each designed to fulfill a unique role.
“One of the biggest challenges for loitering munitions is electronic jamming,” Kiyak stated.
“We are developing a munition specifically designed to detect and neutralize jamming signals. Once deployed, it automatically attacks the source of interference, ensuring continued operational effectiveness for drone systems in the combat zone,” he added.
MKE’s loitering munitions will be available in three categories—short, medium, and long-range—each utilizing GPS guidance for precise targeting.

Upcoming testing, production plans
In addition to the three GPS-guided variants, MKE is also developing a fourth system equipped with a heavy warhead and extended range capabilities.
However, Kiyak emphasized that not all battlefield engagements require long-range solutions.
“Sometimes, short-range operations are necessary,” he noted. “For such cases, we are also working on cable-guided and laser-guided systems, designed for direct visual targeting and engagement.”
MKE plans to conduct the first tests of its short- and medium-range loitering munitions by the end of March. If successful, the company aims to begin serial production of three drone models within the year.
“As we develop these projects, we are simultaneously establishing the necessary infrastructure for mass production,” Kiyak added.

New lightweight 105mm howitzer system
Beyond loitering munitions, MKE is also developing a lightweight 105mm howitzer system. Kiyak highlighted the global demand for transportable artillery systems, particularly for operations where conventional 155mm howitzers cannot be deployed.
“Due to logistical constraints, there are situations where 155mm howitzers cannot be effectively positioned,” Kiyak explained.
“This creates a need for air-transportable howitzers. In some scenarios, artillery must be quickly moved by helicopter, fired, and then relocated,” he added.
MKE’s 105mm howitzers are designed to be lightweight and easily transportable. After analyzing international markets, the company identified a strong demand for vehicle-mounted 105mm howitzers.
“In 2025, we plan to integrate our Boran howitzer onto a 4×4 light-wheeled vehicle,” Kiyak stated.
“This concept has already generated significant interest, particularly from foreign buyers.”

Strategic shift toward export markets
MKE is increasingly focusing on export markets to sustain production and growth. While traditionally catering to the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), the company has expanded its research and development efforts to meet international demand.
“In the past, our efforts were primarily focused on meeting the needs of the Turkish military,” Kiyak said.
“However, without exports, sustaining production is challenging. Over the past year, we have actively pursued international opportunities and expanded our R&D initiatives accordingly,” he added.
MKE’s new projects, including the loitering munition family and the lightweight 105mm howitzer, are expected to enhance the company’s presence in global defense markets.
