In a significant diplomatic move, the Maldives has appointed its inaugural resident ambassador to Türkiye, as announced Wednesday.

President Mohamed Muizzu designated Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as the nation’s top diplomat to the Republic of Türkiye, marking a historic step in bilateral relations.

Latheef, formerly lieutenant general and Chief of the Maldives Defense Force until April this year, brings extensive military leadership experience to his new diplomatic role.

Previously serving as Deputy Chief of the Armed Forces from December 2018 to November last year, Latheef’s appointment underscores the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening ties with Türkiye.

The decision to establish a diplomatic mission in Ankara was initiated following President Muizzu’s official visit to Türkiye last December, where discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation were held.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warmly welcomed President Muizzu and his delegation during their visit to Ankara in November.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Türkiye date back to 1979 and have since grown steadily across various sectors, particularly in tourism and economic collaboration.

Türkiye remains a popular destination for Maldivian tourists, while Turkish firms have made significant investments in the Maldives’ tourism industry.

Beyond economic ties, both nations cooperate closely on international platforms such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations, addressing shared concerns including climate change.

A cooperation agreement signed in 2022 reflects joint efforts to combat climate challenges.

Additionally, bilateral efforts in counterterrorism remain a priority, with Türkiye emphasizing vigilance against the Gulenist terror group (FETO), implicated in the 2016 coup attempt.

This partnership underscores mutual commitments to regional security and stability.

President Muizzu’s diplomatic appointments also included Shiuneen Rasheed as ambassador to Bangladesh and Uz Mohamed Thoha as ambassador to Pakistan, highlighting the Maldives’ broader diplomatic engagements in the region.
