Majority opposes early polls in Türkiye despite CHP’s warning, reveals survey
The majority of people opposed the idea of early elections in Türkiye, a survey conducted by Asal Research Company revealed Monday.
The development comes after the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Ozgur Ozel’s recent statement “If things continue like this, the people will demand early elections, and no one can stand in their way,” sparked a new debate in the country.
In the survey, participants were asked, “Do you think there should be early elections?” 68.3% responded, “No.”
Asal Research published the “Türkiye Political Agenda May 2024 Survey.” The survey included voter support for political parties, opinions on political parties and evaluations of the May agenda topics.
Conducted between May 24-28, 2024, in Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Aydin, Bursa, Balikesir, Diyarbakir, Erzurum, Gaziantep, Hatay, Istanbul, Izmir, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Kirikkale, Konya, Malatya, Manisa, Mardin, Samsun, Sanliurfa, Tekirdag, Trabzon, Van, Yalova and Zonguldak, the survey involved 2,000 participants aged 18 and over.
In the survey, participants were asked: “Do you think there should be early elections?” and 68.3% responded, “No, we do not want early elections.”
The percentage of those who said “yes, we want early elections” was 20.9%, while 10.8% answered: “I have no opinion/No answer.”
Earlier, CHP’s Ozel discussed the possibility of early elections, stating, “I won’t use March 31 as an excuse to call for immediate elections.”
