Main opposition pushes for early elections: ‘We’ll make Erdogan an offer he can’t refuse’
The main opposition party CHP’s Chairman Ozgur Ozel advocates for early elections.
In an interview on Halk TV, Ozel stated, “If conditions remain the same, we will voice our demand for an early election around this time next year and present Erdogan with an offer he cannot refuse in the middle of his term (2.5 years).”
In an interview on Halk TV, CHP Chairman Ozgur Ozel called for early elections, stating, “If conditions remain the same, we will demand an early election around this time next year and present (President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan with an offer he cannot refuse midway through his term (two-and-a-half years).”
‘It is inevitable if public wants it’
Ozel also emphasized that without an early election, President Erdogan cannot run again and outlined a critical timeline, adding “There are five years between two elections, and the midpoint is very critical – 2.5 years. If Mr. Erdogan does not decide to renew the elections, he cannot be a candidate again. At the 2.5-year mark, we will reach a point where we can say, ‘Let’s renew the elections.’ If he comes and runs, then it’s 2.5 years for him and 2.5 years for us. That midpoint holds such significance. If Erdogan is confident, he can come and compete again. If not, every day that passes will be a day he is seen as avoiding the election.”
Ozel pointed out that 360 votes are required from the Turkish Parliament for an early election decision. He explained, “An early election cannot be held because the AK Party cannot say ‘yes.’ Therefore, it is technically impossible. I always say that if the public wants an early election, it becomes inevitable.”
‘I would not run away from early elections’
Ozel had previously said, ” Erdogan was elected for five years, but I think there will be early elections in 1.5 years. I would not run away from early elections, I would run for it.”
