Main opposition leader Ozel defends army college incident amid Erdogan’s criticism
Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Ozgur Ozel continues to engage in events commemorating the 101st anniversary of his party’s founding. During a recent press briefing, Ozel addressed comments made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding the sword oath taken by military lieutenants.
At the graduation ceremony of the National Defense University’s Army War College, a group of new lieutenants, including the school’s valedictorian, drew their swords and chanted “We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal”, raising concerns in various circles in Türkiye.
‘It’s difficult to understand discomfort,’ main opposition leader says
Erdogan had criticized the sword oath practice, stating, “Who are these swords being drawn against? We will not allow our army to be undermined. We have conducted discussions and are working on cleaning it up.” In response, Ozel remarked:
“The sword oath ceremony has been a longstanding tradition at the Military Academy graduation. This ritual, involving the clashing of swords and the oath-taking, has been part of the graduation ceremony every year since the academy’s inception. The press has covered many of these ceremonies.
In the past, President Erdogan has observed, watched, and applauded them. This year, however, the oath, which has not been officially read since 2016, was still performed by the lieutenants. It is difficult to understand the source of this year’s discomfort.”
‘Why should you fear this sword?’
Main opposition leader Ozel further addressed Erdogan’s question, “Who are you drawing those swords against?” He stated, “Do you know who lieutenants draw their swords against? They do so to reassure friends and to intimidate enemies.”
“If you are a friend of the Turkish Armed Forces, a supporter of the constitutional order, or a friend of the Republic of Türkiye and its founders, including Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, why should you fear this sword? It is meant to intimidate those who oppose the nation and its values. The enemies of Türkiye are the ones who should be concerned,” he added.
